Understanding Neuromuscular Therapy (Trigger Point Therapy)
When your muscles are in pain, it’s rarely just about the muscle itself. Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a focused, clinical style of massage that works with specific muscles, trigger points, nerve pathways, and movement patterns to reduce chronic pain, improve mobility, and restore balance in the body.
It is focused on using pressure to stimulate the nervous system and reach deep tissues while respecting how the body compensates, adapts, and holds onto stress.
How does Neuromuscular Therapy work?
Neuromuscular therapy works to interrupt cycles of pain and muscle spasm/tension, as well as reinterpret pain signals in the nervous system. This is done by focusing on:
- Trigger points: hyper-irritable spots in muscle tissue that can refer pain elsewhere (what you think of as a "knot")
- Muscle imbalances and strain patterns
- Postural distortion and movement dysfunction
- Nerve entrapments or mechanical compression
- Re-training areas of the body that are stuck in patterns of tension, guarding, or misfiring
The work is often slower and more precise than a general massage. The goal is helping your body break out of cycles of pain, tension, and compensation.
When NMT is a good fit
Neuromuscular therapy might be especially helpful if you have:
- Chronic muscular pain that keeps coming back or won’t resolve
- Referred pain (e.g., headaches from neck tension, arm pain from the shoulder)
- Postural imbalances causing strain in the neck, back, hips, or legs
- Repetitive stress injuries, such as carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, or plantar fasciitis
- Limited range of motion, stiffness, or loss of strength due to muscle guarding
- Old injuries where the body still hasn’t “let go” of the protective holding pattern
What to expect during a Neuromuscular Therapy session
My approach to neuromuscular therapy is more interactive than a standard relaxation massage. It’s a partnership where your feedback helps guide the work so we can target the right areas safely and effectively.
Here’s what that may look like:
- We begin with a conversation about your symptoms, movement, and posture
- I assess tension and alignment visually and through palpation, to find where the body is compensating
- The session involves specific, slow pressure into trigger points or nerve-affected areas, held and adjusted until the tissue starts to release
- We may combine movement, stretching, or breath work to help re-educate the muscle
- You’ll be invited to give feedback about pain referral, pressure level, and sensation throughout
- Aftercare may include mobility suggestions or self-care strategies to help the work hold longer
The pressure used is firm but always respectful. It should feel "productive", but not like your body is being forced into change. Since we are ultimately trying to change how your nervous system interacts with that part of your body, anything that is too intense and overwhelms your nervous system will be counter-productive. So forget what you've heard about "no pain, no gain". If you are someone that genuinely benefits from deeper pressure, you'll get that too.
How I integrate this with other techniques
Like all massage techniques, I don't believe NMT is the one true answer for all your problems. Rather than blindly applying a "system" or approach to your problem because it "should" work, I like to let your body decide what works. I typically begin with whatever techniques seem most likely to help based on my experience. I blend them together with techniques that create general relaxation and allow me to find additional areas of focus.
By communicating with you and paying attention to how your body responds to each technique, we will tailor the session to your needs together. You are always part of the decision making process. This allows us to gradually find the right mix of techniques that actually gets results for you.
