Stress and Anxiety

Massage therapy helps calm your whole system so you can feel grounded, present, and at ease in your own body again.

Medical massage for stress and anxiety

Stress doesn’t just live in your head. It settles into your body: clenched jaws, tight shoulders, shallow breathing, racing thoughts, fatigue that won’t quit. Over time, it wears you down, physically and emotionally.

Massage therapy helps interrupt that pattern by giving your nervous system space to reset. It doesn’t just relax your muscles, it helps calm your whole system so you can feel grounded, present, and at ease in your own body again.

How massage therapy helps stress and anxiety

Chronic stress and anxiety shift the body into fight-or-flight mode, and keeps it there. With your sympathetic nervous system running on high all the time, you might notice:

  • Tension in the neck, shoulders, jaw, and back
  • Sleep disruption, restlessness, or exhaustion
  • Nervous system sensitivity (easily startled, quick to fatigue)
  • Shallow breathing and elevated heart rate
  • Trouble focusing or calming the mind

Luckily, massage is well suited to help with these issues. Primarily, massage is a treatment that involves nurturing, caring touch. And it just so happens that the human nervous system is wired to respond very favorably to this kind of touch. In fact, it is one of the most powerful ways to illicit this response.

Lets look at some of the specific ways massage helps:

  • Activating the parasympathetic nervous system (this is your body’s “rest-and-digest” mode that promotes important repair processes in the mind and body)
  • Slowing breathing and heart rate, bringing your system back into balance
  • Reducing cortisol and adrenaline (stress hormones that keep you wired)
  • Promoting serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin (Feel good molecules of safety, connection, and wellbeing)
  • Helping you feel present, cared for, and grounded — sometimes for the first time in a while

Of all the effects of massage investigated in scientific studies, I would say its ability to help with psychological experiences of stress and anxiety are some of the best studied with the strongest and most consistent evidence-base. I can personally attest to its effectiveness as well, both as recipient and as therapist. So many of clients tell me how well they sleep and how relaxed they feel the days and weeks after their massage.

Massage isn’t a luxury in this case. It’s regulation, and it’s often one of the most effective nonverbal tools for calming an overstimulated system.

When massage is likely to help your stress and anxiety

First of all, I will say that massage is almost always good for stress and anxiety. Unless you get overly stressed out by the massage experience itself (if you're uncomfortable letting someone touch you, for example). However, there are many signs that suggest you would particularly benefit from a massage at this time, such as:

  • You carry chronic tension in your neck, shoulders, back, or jaw (especially if you feel it is connected to your stress levels)
  • You have trouble sleeping, relaxing, or staying focused
  • You often feel keyed-up, overwhelmed, or fatigued
  • You’ve tried talk therapy or medication but still need support for the physical side of anxiety
  • You’re navigating burnout, grief, trauma, or just a high-stress period of life
  • You need time in your week that’s just for you to feel safe, calm, and supported

Massage won’t make your external stressors go away. But it can help you respond differently from a place of regulation, not reactivity.

What to expect in a session:

Massage for stress and anxiety is gentle, grounding, and entirely guided by your comfort level. The focus is on creating a safe space where your body can let go of tension and your nervous system can settle.

Here’s what that may include:

  • A calm, welcoming environment where you’re invited to slow down from the start
  • Time to share how stress is showing up in your body and mind
  • A quiet, deeply calming session focused on soothing the nervous system and easing physical tension
  • Touch that is slow, intentional, and nurturing. I am careful to never be forceful or overstimulating
  • The option to stay fully clothed, choose music or silence, and request extra comfort items like heat or bolsters
  • Prioritization on communication to understand your needs and ensure that we find the most helpful techniques

There is no agenda beyond your well-being. You’re in control. You don’t have to explain everything, unless you want to. Your body already knows, and massage meets it right where it is.
