Sciatica

Massage therapy helps relieve sciatica by addressing the muscular, fascial, and postural contributors while calming the nervous system that’s often stuck on high alert.

Medical massage for sciatica

Sciatica can feel like it cuts right through your ability to function — sharp, burning, or radiating pain that travels from your lower back down into your hip, glute, or leg. Whether it flares occasionally or lingers constantly, it can seriously impact your daily life.

Massage therapy can help by addressing the muscular, fascial, and postural contributors to sciatica — and by calming the nervous system that’s often stuck on high alert.

How Massage helps sciatica

Sciatica isn’t a specific pathology. It’s a symptom. It refers to pain caused by some kind of offense to the sciatic nerve. This can be irritation, sensitization or compression of the sciatic nerve, which can be caused by:

  • Muscular compression (especially tight piriformis or deep gluteal muscles)
  • Disc issues, like herniation or bulging pressing on a nerve root
  • Spinal misalignment or instability
  • Postural imbalances or prolonged sitting

Massage can be a great way to change the underlying cause in many of these cases by:

  • Releasing muscular compression on the sciatic nerve (especially in the glutes, piriformis, and low back)
  • Easing protective muscle guarding and tension that amplifies pain signals
  • Improving circulation, mobility, and fascial glide in the hips and lower body
  • Calming the nervous system, reducing hypersensitivity and pain reactivity
  • Supporting postural alignment and movement patterns that reduce re-irritation

Massage is such a great help for sciatica because it can help the muscles, fascia, and nervous system adapt and recover more comfortably without making things worse.

When massage is a good fit for sciatica

  • You have radiating pain, tingling, or numbness in the glute, leg, or foot
  • The pain is worse after sitting, standing, or walking for long periods
  • Your discomfort is linked to muscle tightness or posture
  • You’ve been diagnosed with piriformis syndrome, mild disc bulge, or non-surgical sciatica
  • You’re in physical therapy and want additional relief between sessions
  • You need a way to manage symptoms without relying solely on medications
  • You've noticed certain stretches or movements help your pain

I have had really amazing results with so many clients with sciatica, often significantly improving or eliminating symptoms in a single session. This isn't always the case, but I love it when it happens! The only time sciatica doesn't respond well to massage is when it is being caused by a problem deep in the spine or nerve pathway that can't be simply released or calmed down with physical movements. Massage can often still help calm the pain down even when it can't eliminate the problem altogether.

If the nerve is being severely compressed (causing leg weakness, foot drop, or loss of bowel/bladder control), medical intervention comes first. Massage can support healing after.

What to expect during a session

  • We’ll begin with a conversation about your symptoms, posture, lifestyle, and pain patterns
  • The session may focus on the low back, hips, glutes, hamstrings, and calves, depending on where tension is affecting nerve pathways
  • Pressure is adapted to your comfort. The goal is relief, not irritation, so you’ll never be asked to push through sharp or radiating pain.
  • If nerve sensitivity is high, we use slower, more soothing techniques to help calm it

Most people leave feeling looser, lighter, and with less pain (even after the first session!), and with a body more ready to heal.
